My Week In A Nutshell
I’m blessed with the job I have as a dancer and to have made a profession out of something I love so much. I’m also overwhelmed by the beautiful comments since starting my journal. ‘’So proud of you -you’re living the dream.’’ I’m very grateful to hear such kind thoughtful words, but know this...my weeks are not always spent on stage doing multiple shows and photo shoots.
This week I decided to get a casual job… yep, the ‘’9 to 5 life.’’ I have to say, it gives me a really nice feeling of stability and routine. I wake up, go to work & come home. A dancers life is unpredictable and unstable, it gets stressful not knowing when your next job or pay cheque is coming. One week you don’t have a job, the following week you’re in an audition and before you know it you’re on the flight to shoot a movie in India!
As I’ve said before, there are a lot of talented dancers and not much work within Australia. It can get a little disheartening when you’re not constantly working after training for so many years dedicating your life to dance. In the perfect world us dancers would be travelling the world getting paid to do what we love day in and day out… but unfortunately the limited work doesn't allow us all to live that lifestyle.
Sometimes we have to take a different avenue so we can support our dreams. The creative industry is a constant on the go hustle.
Getting a ‘normal’ job isn't a step back, it's opened my eyes to an industry I never thought I was interested in. It’s given me new opportunities and I’ve met a host of really amazing people. Entering a new job has given me a bigger appreciation towards my dance work and has refreshed my love for dancing and performing.
More often then not, things don’t happen the way we would like them to. You have to fill in the gaps so you can work towards what you really love. Whatever you’re doing doesn’t really matter, as long as your learning and it brings you a sense of happiness.
There is always an opportunity ahead but we must try to enjoy every part of the ride, even the slow parts… they just make the thrill so much better.
Who or what do you appreciate most right now?
Love J.H xx
